Was Friday night special in your house?
I want to know what your family traditions for Friday night Shabbat dinner are or were.

What kinds of foods were served?

What blessings or prayers or other customs did or does you or your family observe?

Share your Shabbat story and help create a guidebook/cookbook for other folks to create a similar space for themselves.

Keep Your Shabbat Meals Within the Faith

I'm a big believer that meals for Shabbat and holidays should reflect the Jewish food traditions for kasruth, such as not mixing of meat and milk and avoiding shellfish and pork.

If you need some help on understanding the basic rules and regs of Kosher 101, check out this list from Manichewitz.

If you only eat "kosher style" sometimes or observe kasruth full time, the rules and traditions connect us back to our ancestors and add to our level of observance, which I think is a very good thing.

A Year of 52 Shabbats and Looking Forward

It's been a year since I started this blog and project.
I wish I could say I've written and shared more, but I  have been thinking, plotting and conceptualizing.
I just renewed the domain name and I really believe in the concept, so I hope to move forward this next year.
My first step is to post at least once a month a "Shabbat" story with recipes.
If you have one you'd like to share, please let me know.

Shabbat Dinner on May 27

I always forget to post my menu here -- anyway this last shabbat we had spicy tomato soup with bamba surprise, chicken with curry spices and tomatoes and greens, brown basamati rice, chopped salad with veggies and tamarind salad dressing and oranges and dates.  I'll link to the recipes when they post over at Blog Appetit.

What have you had for Shabbat lately?

Dawn's Shabbat Dinner

We had a wonderful shabbat dinner at Dawn's house.  The menu, spice-rubbed roast chicken and chocolate banana bread, has been a staple of hers for 20 plus years. Please read more about it on the post on my general food blog, Blog Appetit.  Do you serve pretty much the same menu or do you like to vary it up?

One World One Shabbat

Chabad is sponsoring "One World One Shabbat" with the idea to give all Jews a taste of "world to come."  The site has very little info here.  If you are interested, you might want to contact your nearest Chabad branch or local Jewish Community Center.

If you are participating, I'd love to hear about it and your experience.  Please leave a comment and or email me at clickblogappetitATgmailDOTcom

An "Erev Christmas" Shabbat

Last night we had some friends over for a "potluck" Shabbat.

Friends brought appetizers and side dishes and I made a turkey sausage "cassoulet" based on this budget version  I've made before.  The main changes: no chicken, about 28 oz. of sausage, a full can of diced tomatoes (28 oz) with liquid, mushrooms instead of bell peppers and I used a topping from this recipe and browned it in the oven.  Served with a green salad, hearty bread, and baked apples for dessert it was a good meal for what was a cool Northern California night.

Of course we lit the candles and said the prayers, but had no challah so we used some the of artisan bread I had bought to accompany the bean stew.  It seems the store had sold out of all their challah early Friday morning.  Susan and I joked that it was for all those folks buying challah for Christmas morning French Toast.

Afterwards we played Scattergories and sat around and talked until almost 11 p.m.

How did you celebrate Shabbat this December 24th?

Not Just the Meal: What's for Shabbat Dinner?

I am very excited that on the fifth anniversary of Blog Appetit, my main food blog, I'm starting a new project.

I want to know what your family traditions for Friday night Shabbat dinner are or were.
What kinds of foods were served? What blessings or prayers or other customs did or does you or your family observe?  Was/is your observance occasional or regular?  What benefits (or drawbacks) did this observance bring to your life?  How did/does this reflect the customs of your religious, national or cultural background?   How do/did you incorporate other traditions into your food and observance?

This is just the becoming of a much larger effort to collect information and help share the many kinds of Shabbats (and recipes) all of us share.  Please feel free to leave me a comment below or better yet email me at clickblogappetitATgmailDOTcom with your responses, thoughts, information, comments and suggestions.
