An "Erev Christmas" Shabbat

Last night we had some friends over for a "potluck" Shabbat.

Friends brought appetizers and side dishes and I made a turkey sausage "cassoulet" based on this budget version  I've made before.  The main changes: no chicken, about 28 oz. of sausage, a full can of diced tomatoes (28 oz) with liquid, mushrooms instead of bell peppers and I used a topping from this recipe and browned it in the oven.  Served with a green salad, hearty bread, and baked apples for dessert it was a good meal for what was a cool Northern California night.

Of course we lit the candles and said the prayers, but had no challah so we used some the of artisan bread I had bought to accompany the bean stew.  It seems the store had sold out of all their challah early Friday morning.  Susan and I joked that it was for all those folks buying challah for Christmas morning French Toast.

Afterwards we played Scattergories and sat around and talked until almost 11 p.m.
